Spanish American War Archive Walter B Flavell Of NjThis is a spanish american war archive of walter b. Flavell of the 3rd new jersey voluntary infantry. It consists of eleven items a tin regulation drinking cup, a type 1887 cartridge belt with nj brass buckle, marked knapsack, marked canteen, a photograph of infantry musicians, a hpotograph of just walter holding a fife, military song book, fife, and three medals earned. All items are in very nice condition. The tin cup is marked us no the handle and is 4 tall and 4 in diameter. The cartridge belt is black with 45 loops for. 45 rifle ammo. It has a brass hanger and brass nj buckle. The khaki knapsack has a 2 wide leather strap that is stamped rock island arsenal and inspectors initials w. T. G. And initials a. H. The outer flap is amrked n. G. N. J. / u. S. In teh center and w. B. Flavell. /3rd n. J. V. I. Just above. Inside flap has owners name as well as rock island arsenal. The flap secures with a small buckle & strap. There is a buttoned front pocket, a large rear pocket and two small side pockets, each containing a leather sheath for mess utensils. The saw canteen has a 1 wide leather strap which is stamped rock island arsenal, cork has metal cap and retainer, the khaki cover is marked n. G. N. J. / u. S. On one side and w. B. Flavell.
/3rd n. J. V. I. On the other. All seams tight, no flaws or damage. The band photo shows 26 members of the 3rd regiment drum corps, including wb flavell indicted by arrow on the glass. This photo frame is marked on the back indicating it was taken may 25th 1898 ta camp vouvhees in sea grit, n. J. The individual photo is on 5 5/16 x 6 3/8 card stock and shows walter wearign the cartridge belt with the fife stuck under his arm. On the bakc in ink is his name and in pencil it states dec.
1898/ athens, ga. The fife is 17 long with 1 7/8 metal sleeves on each end. It has 6 finger holes and one blow hole. It is made of a dark brown hard wood, with a makers mark of crosby half wya between the blow hole and first finger hole. W. Flavell is carved small and neat on the opposite side of the fife between the maker's mark and blow hole. There are three small adjacent surface flaws, which seem to be related to the grain of the wood. The song book has a protective maroon leather cover. There are a few loose and chipped pages. The original sfot cover states dedicated to the gar, war songs/ for anniversaries and gatherings of soldiers, copyright 1890 by oliver ditson company, boston. It is 96 pages in length adn measures 7 x 10. Has 36 war songs and 17 songs and hymns for memorial day. Walter b. Flavell's name is neatly inked on the title pages. The medals are as follows1 a â¾ united spanish war veterans cross/ 1898 â? 1902, stud back yb whitehead & hoag co, newark. N. J, 2 a 1 â½ brass medal depicting a four leaf clover hanging from a pin back suspension bar which reads 3rd n. J. V. I. (new jersey volunteer infantry).
On the clover have been engraved his enlistment dates may 12-98 and feb 11-99, 3 is a large medal mounted on a 2 â¾ x 4 â½ pale green silk covered cardboard. The pin back hanger states new jersey volunteer and attaches a blue ribbon. The suspended cross with wreath states spanish american war 1898.
All aer in excellent condition. Not often does a grouping this nice come along. We'll be glad to answer questions and shaer additional photos.
