Check out this spectacular super rare multicolored victorian fan top sign, the hero of manila, picturing rear admiral george dewey usn, commander in chief of the asiatic squadron! On the evening of april 30, 1898, during the philippine american war, dewey and his fleet sailed into manila bay and defeated the spanish fleet there teh following day. As a result, in march 1899, dewey was appointed admiral of the navy and led a victory parade in new york city on sept 30, 1899, participating in celebrtaions in washington dc & montpelier vermont. Dewey fever was at its peak. Anything and everything possible was created bearing the image of dewey from soap to ufrniture to toys to this wonderful fan top sign!

It's thick cardboard, 7 x 8 diameter iwth scalloped edge outlined in gold leaf. Besides the beautiful flowers no the lower left, it has the most subtle lace-like floral design, covering the entire background! The pieec de resistance. It's in outstanding condition, especially considering it's over 100 years old! Just 2 pinpoint holes, top & bottom where the wooden handle was attached which don't at all detract from the beauty of the sign. We've never seen this piece before!
